In May a small group of living churchyard volunteers went on a churchyard management afternoon with other groups in the area. Having learnt a great deal we started to put it into action in St Mary's. Using willow whips we created a fence.

This wasn't an easy task as the ground was hard with hidden roots and stones; the willow was very bendy so not great at piercing the ground! We persevered and a new wildflower area was born!

Once cordoned off, this area won't be mowed until late summer, so we can see how the flowers grow and seed. The meadow count to date is:

Daisy, oxeye daisy, birdsfoot trefoil, germander speedwell, primrose, dandelion, red clover, rough hawkbit, common sorrel, wild arum, meadow & creeping buttercups, hedge & lady’s bedstraws, ribwort & hoary plantains, yarrow, hogweed, Good Friday rush, blue sedge, grasses including quaking, cocksfoot, smooth meadow, and sweet vernal.

If you spot anything extra in this or the rest of the churchyard, please let us know.

Our next step is to see what wildlife is attracted to these flowers so we have arranged a moth trap event on 24th June. Please come along to see what we catch, and learn from a local moth expert.
